Green Supply Chain
Economic trends are accelerating the movement towards greener supply chains. Higher fuel prices have already seen companies reassess their supply chain structure, a trend which pressures on carbon emissions will not change.
Radically restructuring the supply chain to reduce fuels costs and carbon emissions can be very costly, or have a potential impact on lead-times and services (for example, if you were to cut out air transport) However, there are other ways in which supply chains can become 'green' as well as 'lean', for example in product packaging, with smaller boxes, less filler, better pallets, and improved truckloading techniques.
Lean Business France is already contributing to a greener supply chain. Many of the seven standard forms of waste are energy-consuming, and taking these non value-adding activities out of the processes is contributing to both a 'leaner' and a 'greener' supply chain.
How green is your supply chain? What other measures could you be taking to be even more energy-efficient? How can you balance 'green' with 'service' using Lean techniques.
